1. What forms are required to apply for an Initial NJ Firearms ID card or Initial Firearms ID card and Handgun Permit(s):

All forms are available on-line or at Readington Township Police Department.  

• Application for Firearms Purchaser Identification Card and/or Handgun Purchase Permit
• Consent For Mental Health Records Search
• copy of recent paystub (except for self-employed, unemployed or student)
• Juvenile Record Search (25 years old and younger)

Before the completed forms are submitted to the police department, you will be given a New Jersey Universal Fingerprint Form, in order to make arrangements to have your fingerprints taken by Idento (a State Police contracted agency).  You must appear at the Readington Twp Police Department to obtain that number.

Processing your application will begin when you return your Idento/Morphotrak receipt and all completed paperwork to us, which MUST be dropped off by the applicant.

 

2. What forms are required for a Duplicate NJ Firearms ID card and/or Handgun permit(s):

All forms are available on-line or at Readington Township Police Department.  


• Application For Firearms Purchase Identification Card and/or Handgun Purchase Permit
• Consent For Mental Health Records Search Form
• Criminal History Record Information Electronic 212A Request Form which is only available on-line, and requires an $20 fee.
• Recent Paystub (except for self-employed, unemployed or student)

• Juvenile Record Search (25 years old and younger)

 

3. Why is a recent paystub required?

The paystub is only used to verify your employment; personal/confidential information can be omitted.

 

4. How long does the process usually take once all forms are submitted? approx. 30 – 45 days, however, common delays are:


• Incomplete forms
• Incomplete/incorrect addresses on application for your references
• the return of letters we mail to your references
• Idento/Morphotrak (fingerprinting) receipt not being returned to the police department (only applies to applicants applying for an Initial ID card).

 

5. What are the fees due the police department? 

The cost for an Initial ID card is $5.00 and each handgun permit is $2.00. These fees can be paid when you submit your application or when your application has been processed. Personal check, money order or cash, only in the exact amount, is accepted.

  

6. Will I be contacted when my ID card/permit is ready? 

Yes – using the home telephone number entered on your application.

 

7. How do you buy rifles and/or shotguns, including bb, pellet, and black powder rifles?

 

It is the responsibility of the seller of the shotguns, including bb, pellet, firearm to ascertain that the buyer has a Firearms Purchaser Identification Card plus one additional form of photo identification and completes Certificate of Eligibility. The information contained on the Firearms Purchaser Identification Card must match the identification of the transferor. A Certificate of Eligibility can be obtained at any licensed firearms dealer.

 

8. How do you transport firearms?

 

Firearms shall be carried unloaded and contained in a closed and fastened case, gunbox, securely tied package, or locked in the trunk of the automobile in which it is being transported.

Ammunition must be transported in a separate container and locked in the trunk of the automobile in which it is being transported. If the vehicle does not have a compartment separate from the passenger compartment, the firearm must be in a locked container other than the vehicle's glove compartment or console.

  


9. If I inherit a firearm what must I do?

 

Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 2C:58-3j, a firearm purchaser identification card and/or a handgun purchase permit shall not be required for the passing of a firearm upon the death of an owner thereof to his/her heir or legatee, whether the same by testamentary bequest or by the laws of intestacy. The firearm must be legal to possess in New Jersey and the pers N.J.S.A. 2C:58-3c on receiving the firearm shall not be prohibited by before receiving the firearm. If the heir or legatee does not qualify to acquire and possess the firearm, then ownership may be retained for a period not to exceed 180 days provided the firearm is transferred to the chief law enforcement officer of the municipality or the superintendent during such period.

 

 

10. I have moved to New Jersey from another state. May I continue to possess my firearm(s)?

 

Firearms which have been legally acquired in another state and are legal to possess in New Jersey may be brought to New Jersey by the owner when residency is established. The owner may VOLUNTARILY register the firearm(s) by completing a Voluntary Form of Firearms Registration, however the owner is not obligated to do so.
